A guaiac resin is known to be extracted from the seeds of Nectandra oppositifolia, a plant used as traditional medicine in Brazil. In this work, the hydrolyzed guaiac resin from the seeds of N. oppositifolia (GHR-NO) was synthesized by the use of hydrochloric acid and decolorized by a fractionation process, which was analyzed by infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). To evaluate the toxicity of GHR-NO in comparison with its hydrolyzed analog (GHR-OH), an acute toxicity test was performed by administration of a single dose (1,000 mg/kg of body weight) to mice and analyzed up to 72 h post-administration. Acute toxicity was not observed with GHR-NO or GHR-OH. However, the hydrolyzed resin (GHR-OH) was toxic to the molluscicidal bacterium Bacillus sp. CV116. In comparison with GHR-OH, GHR-NO is a non-toxic resin. Hydrolyzed GHR-NO was less toxic to the bacterium compared to the non-hydrolyzed resin.Q:
